Install a Tiller Pilot Remote Control.

REMOTE CONTROL OF RAYMARINE TILLER PILOT (ST1000 or ST2000 for SJ23) - To control your Tiller Pilot from the cabin or fore deck can be a huge advantage for many reasons.  I have transited the length of our lake in really miserable weather during which I wish I had a remote control for the Tiller Pilot so I didn't have to go into the cockpit in the near freezing weather.  I'm sure that many of you share my desire for a remote control when working on the foredeck.  Having the hull round up in the middle of lowering a jib is a royal pain in the butt.  This Tech Tip expands on Tech Tip E12, "Install an Electric Autopilot" to describe the hardware for steering an SJ23 by a remote control.

A Nauti-Control remote system is a cost effective way to control a Tiller Pilot with the installation of their wireless gateway module.  The module converts commands from the handheld remote directly to Raymarine SeaTalk commands to control the Tiller Pilot via WI-FI.

  • The wireless gateway is the brown circuit board shown at right.
    - ST version is for Autohelm or Raymarine SeaTalk; ST1000 or ST2000.
    - N2K version is for Raymarine NMEA2000 or SeaTalk devices.

  • The 4 button handheld remote is shown next to the wireless gateway.

  • The 6 button hand held remote control is easier to use with gloves.

  • The watch style remote is the least likely to fall overboard!
Personally,  I'd hang one of those remotes on a lanyard around my neck.

  • An Apple or Android device can display the 6 switches to operate the Tiller Pilot.

The installation of the gateway module was straight forward.  The 3D printed box that houses the gateway module can be Velcro'd anywhere in the cabin.  One data wire from the module goes to terminal 4 on the cockpit power connector.  Two power wires from the module go to the boat power distribution panel.  My ST1000 works great.  I can control it from either remote, my iPhone, my watch, iPad or computer.  Robert Hasegawa.

STORAGE - Judging by the fact that many Nauti-Controls have survived winters in Sweden or Finland where winter is similar to Canada, it can absolutely survive a winter stored on a boat on the Canadian prairies.  This means it doesn't have to be removed for off season storage.  However, if the box is Velcro'd to the cabin wall, removal is a piece of cake.

J300X REMOTE CONTROL of Simrad - This hardware version requires a bit more surgery to implement.
